Mealworms are widely used as a substitute for traditional fish meal due to their ease of breeding and high nutritional value. They help increase the egg-laying rate of poultry and the weight gain rate of broilers, while reducing feed costs. In the breeding of broilers, replacing a portion of domestic fish meal with 3% to 6% of fresh worms can significantly increase the weight gain rate of broilers by 13%, and also increase the feed efficiency rate by 23%. Additionally, replacing imported fish meal with 5% mealworm larvae powder for laying hens at the peak of egg-laying can be tested for 23 days. The results show that the egg-laying rate of hens fed with mealworms reached 93.42%, while the egg-laying rate of hens fed with imported fish meal was 92.33%, an increase of 1.09 percentage points, and the egg weight also increased by 0.37 grams.
Furthermore, when 1% of mealworm powder was used to replace the trace elements in the feed for laying hens for 43 days, the egg production rate increased by 7% to 12%; while when 1% of mealworm was used to replace the same amount of high-efficiency concentrated feed for laying hens for the same period of time, the egg production rate increased by 2.38%.
